Description
From child labor to child soldiers, sex slaves to sweat shop workers, the abhorrent practice of slavery persists today. Among the apparently “free”, debt slavery has seduced and entrapped millions more by appealing to human desire and impatience. All that glitters is not gold. A chain can represent opulence or oppression. It can represent violence, containment and captivity. It can form a barrier, or an escape line. This minimal work of cut-paper collage responds to this complexity. The question it poses is material, philosophical and challenges perspective. Are you enslaved? Saved? Both?
This artwork was first exhibited during A Light in the Dark– a group exhibition held at the West Torrens Auditorium Gallery during Adelaide Fringe 2021. It has two d-rings mounted on the back of the foam board for easy hanging. Other sizes are available upon request.
